Coming from a farming background, our clients wanted a home that would reflect the environment in which they live & work drawing from imagery of the Australian Rural Vernacular. The house should combine the functional honesty of traditional farmhouses & outbuildings with contemporary design in a new passive solar, energy efficient family home.

Detailed Design Elevations
The North Elevation shows the alfresco deck & large windows to all main rooms which will allow for excellent passive solar gain in winter & provide views across the property & beyond.
The East Elevation shows a large timber sliding barn door which forms the main entrance to the house. The elevated timber walkway leads form the carport to the main entrance & alfresco deck beyond.
Site Analysis
Toodyay experiences harsh climatic variations from very hot, dry summers to freezing winter nights. Careful consideration of solar orientation is key to providing a comfortable living environment year round.
The natural terrain slopes down gently with views East over the valley below & long views North to Toodyay. Existing trees to the west can be used to screen the hot afternoon sun while prevailing breezes are controlled to provide natural ventilation & cooling in summer.

Concept Diagrams
Preliminary massing diagrams explore layout options. The sleeping spaces are assigned a north facing frontage for passive solar gain in winter. Living spaces have an east west axis to avail of valley views & provide a strong presence from the approach.
Concept Sketch
A large, north facing alfresco deck will provide outdoor living & dining areas with views across the valley & passive solar gain in winter.

Concept Sketch - Interior
An interior view of the open plan kitchen / dining / living area. Raked ceilings increase the feeling of space and large windows fill the room with natural light while providing carefully considered views over the valley below & towards Toodyay beyond. A recycled brick spine wall provides thermal mass while acting as a threshold from semi-private living areas to private sleeping areas.
